Abstract

Despite the excellent results achieved by the Italian Teachers’ Association “Nicolò Tommaseo” during the First World War as for activities, number of members and public presence, the association of catholic teachers went towards a sudden break up. The crisis preconditions, as the paper proves, are previous to the power seizure of the fascism and lie in the different opinions expressed about the minister Gentile’s school reform by the catholic teachers and by their political representatives of the Popular Party. In 1924 the “Nicolò Tommaseo” definitively lined up on the fascist side, remaining isolated in the catholic movement.
