Abstract

This paper addresses the issue of the rehabilitation of prisoners engaged in external jobs, as stipulated by Article 21 of the Italian Law 354/1975. According to some historical and pedagogical reflections on the prison, it is possible to understand the evolution of educational pathways and the different conception of work during the transition from the “obligation” to an “opportunity” of social redemption. Thus, it was decided to adopt a hermeneutic approach based on biographical interviews, in order to understand expectations, perceptions and mental representations of prisoners. The involved structure has been the Social Cooperative “L’Approdo”, located in Avellino (Campania, Southern Italy).
